Instant Coffee Invention:

George Constant Louis Washington (not related to President Washington), a Belgian man, is best remembered for his invention of an early instant coffee process in 1906.

Salute to instant:

Instant coffee became a novelty in the early 1900s and found its niche market in the military. Caffeine consumption on the battlefield provided a much needed boost and was made easier with instant coffee. In World War I some soldiers nicknamed it “a cup of George”.

Hallelujah to Coffee:

When Pope Clement VIII tried coffee, he enjoyed it so much that he baptized the drink, making it acceptable for all Catholics to consume.


A coffee tree has a lifespan of about 50 to 70 years and is able to flower eight times in any one year - depending on rainfall.

In Demand:

Coffee is the second most widely used commodity in the world after oil and to date; there are over one billion coffee drinkers on the planet.

Natural Repellent:

Sprinkle some coffee grounds in the garden or around the house, it will ward off ants.

Gold beans:

The most expensive coffee in the world is called Kopi Luwak. Kopi is the Indonesian word for the coffee and Luwak is a local name of the Asian Palm Civet. Kopi Luwak is coffee made from the beans of coffee berries which have been eaten by the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) and other related civets, then passed through its digestive tract. After gathering, thorough washing, sun drying, light roasting and brewing, these beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness.

Coffee Holidays:

Coffee is so popular that it even has its own holidays. Costa Ricans celebrate coffee on September 12th, while the Irish celebrate coffee on September 19th. A few days later, on October 1st, Japanese people celebrate “Coffee Day”.

Coffee is packed with antioxidants that reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseases. Recent studies have shown coffee can lessen the likelihood of diabetes, may decrease gallstone formation in men and in some cases, lower incidences of Parkinson’s disease.
